Important Notes

  • You must first export a .srt (SubRip) subtitle file from Sonix.

  • Facebook requires the subtitle file to follow specific naming conventions for language codes.

  • You can add captions in multiple languages by repeating the import steps for each language.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. In your Sonix project, click Export, and choose SubRip subtitle file (*.srt).

  2. Upload your video to Facebook and choose the video file from your computer and click Post.

  3. Add the SRT file as captions once Facebook notifies you that it's ready.

  4. Once the video is live or has finished processing, go to the post and click Options → Edit Video.

  5. In the edit settings, under Upload SRT files, click Choose File and select the .srt file you exported from Sonix.

  6. Click Save to attach the subtitles to your video.

  7. To add captions in additional languages, repeat the steps above (edit video → upload SRT) for each language version of the subtitle file.

  8. To remove captions from a Facebook video, open the video post, click OptionsEdit this video and click the X next to the subtitle file you want to remove. Click Save to apply changes.

Common Issues and Troubleshooting

Why doesn’t Facebook accept my .srt file?

Make sure the .srt file is correctly formatted and encoded (UTF-8). Also check that the language code in the file name matches Facebook’s requirements (e.g., filename.en_US.srt).

Why don’t my subtitles appear after uploading?

Ensure you clicked Save after uploading the SRT in the video edit screen. Also, confirm the video has finished processing before trying to add captions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to rename the SRT file before uploading?

Yes, Facebook often requires the file name to reflect the language, such as filename.en_US.srt.

Can I use the same SRT file for multiple videos?

You could, but the timecodes must match the video. If the video content differs in length or timing, the captions will be out of sync.

Does Sonix support exporting captions for social media platforms besides Facebook?

Yes. Sonix supports exporting SRT or VTT files which you can import to other platforms like YouTube, Vimeo, etc.
